 Succulent perennial to 30 cm high stems marbled,  four-sided branches are markedly variegated with vertical rainbow striations fading from green to blue to whitish grey along the prominently and sharply-toothed spine margins outlined in reddish brown 
Flowers pinkish 3 mm long and 45 mm in diameter, with cup-shaped involucres, male flowers: Few bracteoles spathulate, female flower: Styles 3 up to 35 mm long, joined for 15 mm, red, apices slightly thickened
