Succulent plant forming large rosettes leaves fleshy, rigid, prickly margins, narrow 30-80 cm long, 35-10 cm wide, pointed tip topped with dark brown coloured spine 15-35 cm long mature plant produce  a massive flower cluster (1-2 m long) on a robust flowering stem 3-5 m tall, flowers greenish yellow fruit capsules 5 cm long
Remark : Most Agave species are monocarpic, individual rosettes living for a number of years without flowering before sending up an often very large flowering stem and then dying after flowering and setting seed This species, however, produces a number of new rosettes from suckers or offsets during its lifespan and these new plants will continue to grow after the death of the parent plant
 
Ornamental. The plant is often grown as a living fence or hedges.This plant is the source of the fibre called "ixtle", with which ropes, strings, satchels and kitchen utensils are manufactured. The root contains saponins and can be used as a soap substitute
