Clump-forming perennial herb with tuberous roots semi-evergreen leaves attractive, basal rosette , dark glossy green, lobed or divided, glabrous, 50 cm long, 30 cm wide flowers borne on erect spike to 90-120 cm tall emerging from the leaf rosette  capsule about 2 cm long containing 1-2 brown seeds

Grown as much for its attractive foliage as for its architecturally bold flower spikes. Acanthus leaves have a classical appearance and were the source of the Corinthian leaf motif developed and used as a decoration in ancient Greek and Roman art and architecture. A pretty addition to beds and borders, cottage gardens.
