Solitary trunks, grey in color, growing 30 m tall, 40-50 cm in diameter leaves: fan-shaped and 3 m long, with robust black teeth on the petiole margins flower dioecious with male and female flowers on separate plants fruit broadly ovoid, 12-25 cm wide, 15-25 kg in weight, black, fibrous, fleshy, often fragrant, each containing 1-3 seeds

Leaves used for thatching, basket, hats and writing material. many parts of the plants are traditionally used as food. the pulp of the fruit is eating . the sweet sap, which is obtained from tapping the inflorescences can be drunk immediately, used to make sugar and used as a substitute to replace cane sugar. With a 5 to 6 % alcohol content, the sap can be fermented for a few hours and later be converted into distilled ethanol or vinegar.
