Evergreen shrub or small tree up to 3-8 m tall, in the west to 20 m tall, 90 cm in diameter leaves dark green, compound, margin serrate flowers showy purple, fruit pod, ripe fruits split open to release seeds which are dispersed by wind at some distance from the parent tree

The tree has a range of local medicinal uses, for which it is gathered from the wild. It is often grown as a living hedge to mark boundaries, and is also sometimes grown as an ornamental, where it is valued for its flowers
