Semi deciduous tree to 7-13 m high leaves spirally arranged, elliptic to obovate 7-10 cm flowers white to cream, in spikes to 12 cm fruits winged oval, purplish-red to brown when mature Soil: prefers deep, sandy soils, and is widespread on loam soils
The tree is mainly used locally as a source of medicines, timber and tannins. Good source of timber and charcoal, firewood. The strong timber, durable and termite resistant wood is used for construction, beams and rafters, poles and posts. The tree is widely recommended for agroforestry despite its rather dense shade, crops do well under its canopy
