Deciduous small tree to 10 - 18 m high  succulent stems  leaves palmate, rich green 3-6 leaflets flowers solitary or paired, pink, coiled petals, stamens many united at base, silky rose pink, tipped with golden anthers fruit a capsule, to 15 cm yellow-brown, dehiscent, seeds embedded in silky fiber

Ornamental tree . The tree is a very handsome one when in flower. The flowers often are used as decorations in houses and churches. Seeds of the white-flowered form are eaten as a snack food.
