Deciduous tree growing  15-25 m tall The tree has a bloated water-storing trunk that can be 100cm in diameter leaves pinnately compound up to 1 m long flowers whitish are borne in large sprays fruits up to 50 cm long  contain 6-12 large nut- shaped  edible seeds

The tree is also esteemed as an ornamental because of its stature, large leaves, scented flowers, and fast growth. The leaves can be eaten as a vegetable and the large, oil and protein-rich seeds are edible as well.
