Evergreen shrubs grow up to 2-5 m tall leaves simple broadly heart-shaped to ovate, 6-16 cm long flowers bright red, tubular and 5 petals, they remain partially closed, with only the stigma and stamens emerging,  resembling an unopened flower
Ornamental shrub. Traditional medicine. Edible fruit can be eaten raw or cooked. Used for erosion control, making dyes, and being added to salads or teas. Leaf preparations can be used as an emollient to soften skin and a decoction or infusion can be applied to hair to make it soft. Attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
