Evergreen shrub, dioecious plant, slow growing 18-20 m tall leaves opposite, leathery, oblong ovate, dull blue-green female flower borne singly 10-20 mm, male flowers greenish, in small clusters fruit about 25 mm, green but finally brown, nut-like, ovoid, tough, leathery, obtusely 3-angled, edible, tasting somewhat like hazelnut, but it is slightly bitter until cured
