Evergreen Shrub or small tree, spiny with crooked, thorny branches,  grow up to 25 m tall leaves coriaceous, rigid, densely dotted with oil glands, 25-38 cm long, 12-18 mm wide, flowers fragrant, usually 2-3 fasciculale Fruit berry  depressed globose, becoming black at maturity, seeds large, ovoid Certain broad-leaved forms growing near the seashore  have shown not only great vigour under cultivation, but also high resistance to boron and injurious saline solutes

Wood hard. The plant can be used as a root-stock for Citrus spp. It is sufficiently distantly related to be quite immune to several Citrus diseases, and is also able to grow in saline and boron-rich soils that are usually unsuitable for Citrus spp.
