Solitary dioecious palm to 25 m high, 1 m in diameter at the base trunk grey  leaves fan 3 m wide, petiole 2 m long, the margins armed with spines male flowers small and clustered within catkins, female flowers large, solitary and globe-shaped, 3-5 cm in diam growing on unbranched  spikes 15-3 m fruit fragrant, large, 12-18 diam, edible, ovoid drupes, bright orange-brown to yellow  when ripe, pulp surrounding 1-3 large seeds

fruits eaten raw, roasted. used make juice and fermented drinks. the tree provides timber termite-proof. thatch from leaves.
