Very short-stemmed palm, pinnate, dioecious,  prickly, stemless clumping palm leaves erect up to 6 m tall female inflorescence 20-30cm long, male inflorescence 50-100 cm long Male flowers reddish tubular corolla, female flowers yellow green fruit a round to elliptical drupe, covered in imbricate scales which turn  reddish brown to nearly red when ripe

The plant is commonly cultivated for its edible fruit in tropical Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia where it is very highly esteemed and is often found in local markets. Leaflets are used for thatching while bark of the petioles are used for matting.
