Stems clustered, non- climbing, free-standing, to 5 m long and 65 cm diameter, Leaf sheaths open, gray green, flagella absent, petioles 25-200 cm long, with black spines rachises to 28 m long with 36-55 lanceolate leaflets per side, grayish-white on the lower surface, cirri absent fruits ovoid to ellipsoid 22 cm long, yellowish or reddish-brown 

ornamental palm. The mature stem can be used as sticks, poles or as roof support in thatched huts. The dried stem can also be used as handles of hatchets
