Single-stemmed, evergreen palm growing from 8-20 m tall, 50 cm in diameter leaves pinnate to 9 m long inflorescences  between the leaves initially enclosed in a persistent woody spathe up to 2m long fruit ovoid 5-10 cm long and 3-45 cm in diameter, yellow, orange or brown when ripe

Ornamental palm. A fibre obtained from the leaves can be used to make ropes and coarse fabrics. An oil obtained from the seed is used in making soaps.
