Soil: light (sandy), medium (loamy) and heavy (clay) soils and prefers well-drained soil Suitable pH: mildly acid, neutral and basic (mildly alkaline) soils and can grow in very acid, very alkaline and saline soils

It is widely cultivated as a vegetable crop. The tender young shoots(spears) are eaten as vegetable.  Asparagus has been highly valued and prescribed to stimulate and strengthen kidney function. In Asian medicine, asparagus root is given for cough, diarrhea, and nervous problems.
