Stem arborescent, solitary, erect, 12 m tall, 40-45 cm diameter leaves 15 -25 m long, glossy, dark green leaflets attached to the leaf stalk, are 160-250 x 25-45 mm, but reduce in size closer to the base of the leaf stalk The leaflets overlap and a distinguishing feature is that these leaflets are reflexed from the leaf stalk male cones 1-4, sub-cylindrical, 30-60 cm long female cones 1-5, ovoid, yellow, 50-80 cm long, 20-30 cm in diameter

It is a tall majestic tree and has been protected by generations of rainqueens. It forms pure forests on these hills, the only cycad forests in Southern Africa.

E. transvenosus is a particularly attractive species, provided it has sufficient space and ideal growing conditions
