Slow-growing, palm-like, stem erect 2-6 m tall, 30 cm in diameter leaves pinnate, numerous, 1-2 m long 

 

The leaves are often gathered from the wild for use as decorations and the plant is sometimes grown as an ornamental. The stems are rich in starch and can be used to make a sago.
