Palm-like plant with a  swollen trunk, 2-12 m tall, 14-20 cm in diameter, rarely 1 m in diameter leaves semi-glossy, deep green to gray green 15-24 m long male cone solitary, erect, ovoid 30-55 cm long, 22 cm in diameter, yellow-orange Female cone is flattened globose (8 – 14 cm diameter), sporophylls are covered with brown hairs and round apical lobes are lined with 22 – 46 spines at the margin Seed is almost round (3 – 37 cm long and 25 – 35 cm wide) with yellow seed coat
