Natal cycad grows 6 m tall, single trunk  or branches of the base leaves pinnate 15-3 m long, leaflets20 cm long, 4 mm wide,  dark green and entire or 1-5 teeth on one or both margins the male cones cylindrical, yellowish-green, 50 cm long, 12 cm across, female cones oblong-ovate 50 cm long, 30 cm wide, seeds red oblong 30 mm long, 18 mm in diameter

Ornamental plant . In times of famine the pith of the stem was used as a substitute for bread flour, hence the common names.
